Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
